God is AWESOME, sorry for the delay, and Healing Faith ROCKS!

Hello all!

God is good all the time, and all the time God is good. He knows my heart. He knows that I tend to procrastinate. I'm being very open and honest with you guys. I went on a mission trip by the grace of God and the support of many friends, family, and loved ones this past July. I intended to blog about my experience right when I got back, but kept...well, putting it off. But His Word says in Romans 8:28, 'And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.' So, here I am, finally sharing my experience with Healing Faith in Jinja, Uganda!!!

Working in the village was my favorite part of the trip. It started with a long drive down red dirt roads that were lined with tiny makeshift dwellings made out of whatever was available. From tin to wood, dried foliage, and sometimes brick, that sold anything from vegetables and raw meat, to cell phone minutes and electronics. As we pulled into the village at about 5 miles per hour, the kids chased our van and  some of the older boys, about 10 years old, would jump on the back end of the van, which they apparently do every time. The driver slowed to a stop and told them to get off. The translator Miriam was very good at getting the kids to listen. At one point, she got out of the car and yelled something in Lugandan that made me feel like I was in trouble ha! It kept the kids off from then on that day. We pulled into the village after traveling down a windy dirt road, full of bumps from the dried dirt tire tracks. We are immediately greeted by the people of the village, especially the children, ready to participate in whatever we have for them.

The tasks varied per day, whether it was Malaria education or fun day with the children. Fun days consisted of making a huge circle, singing songs about Jesus, introducing the guests (our team), and playing a game of cat and mouse. Then, Jason would gather the children around for story time out of the children's Bible, which would be translated by John, who is a Healing Faith translator and very animated!! He sure knew how to make the kids laugh! Then, we had 4 stations that included freeze dance, attempts at volleyball, jump rope, and the huge parachute elementary kids here in America are very familiar with :). We rotated the groups divided by colored paper bracelet through each station. I think I can speak for the entire team by saying it was so much FUN!!

At the end of one of our play days, Jason and Kari were made aware that some children were not feeling well. What I found during my time there that was very awesome was, between the Segner family, the McMorris family, our team, and the two interns Katie and Greg, there were many sets of eyes to seek out a child that did not seem to be feeling very well. While we waited, we got our hair braided by the young girls and the boys played soccer.

Once it was time to go, Jason and Kari found about 5 children who tested positive for malaria. Each of them were under the age of 6 I believe. Thankfully, Jason and Kari have the ability to test and treat Malaria right there in the village if it's caught early. Sometimes they have to take the children into town if it is severe enough, all at no cost to the family. A test for malaria costs about $2 American dollars. As a very wise woman once said, that is the price of our Happy Hour sonic drink!!! But yet, children halfway around the world are unable to afford it. Healing Faith ministry is able to save tiny lives that otherwise would not be able to overcome this very treatable disease.

Children and pregnant women are the most at risk for getting malaria, which is a disease spread through mosquitoes that can be dehabilitating to children and babies if not deadly. The World Health Organization reports that one child dies every 60 seconds from malaria. Without access to healthcare and little knowledge of prevention or even cause and symptoms, death is high among malaria victims. But, our Mighty God has sent Jason and Kari Segner, along with their 5 children and many partners in Healing Faith like the missions teams, interns, the McMorris family, and friends that they have made in Uganda and the support from here in the states that help them provide education, treatment, and the power of prayer and faith while spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ to the people of Uganda for the past few years now.

The Segners have developed a Malaria education program that they implement throughout the villages once the hand in hand relationships are built between themselves and the villagers. We covered a lot of ground between our mission team, the interns, Jason, and Dave. We parked the van and unloaded a wagon filled with mosquito nets, hanging supplies, and education material, which included easy to understand hand sketched information sheet and coloring books for the kids about malaria, drawn by Kari herself! A group of young boys, about 10 years and younger wanted to pull the wagon of supplies. They outlasted us that day! Without shoes or water, they were full of energy and we were exhausted as we traveled down the red dirt road from dwelling to dwelling. We would ask if they had nets already and if they did Katie, some of our team, and Miriam the translator would go over the education. The education material included how malaria gets spread, through mosquitoes and not bad spirits or because of past sins, which is a common belief. It shows who is most at risk, which are children and pregnant women, and how to prevent the  mosquitoes from breeding in your area by keeping puddles of standing water away from your homes. If the home did not already have nets, Jason, Greg, Dave, and the rest of the team would go inside of their homes to hang the mosquito nets over their beds. We had to get very creative because most of the homes were made out of sticks and the red clay that had hardened from the sun. The dark rooms were small with few, if any windows, which lead us to using flash lights and the headband lights like the minions in Dispicable Me :) Finding somewhere to tie the strings was challenging, but made it all the more enjoyable to rely on the other team members to work together to get the job done. It was a humbling experience to go into their homes, to see where they sleep, and the simple means by which they live from day to day. They are so joyful with so little, it really opened my eyes to the simple things in life versus the always striving for more and better material things here at home. I know God places us where we are for a purpose. We are blessed where we are in order to bless others. The people of the village that day blessed me more than they will ever know.

Jason and Kari are incredibly amazing missionaries that are great stewards of each and every thing that God has blessed them with, from their time, talents, gifts, children, love, leadership skills, and the list could go on and on. I have, along with a few others, witnessed a small piece of their time and work in Jinja, and can honestly say that they are the REAL DEAL! They serve God with everything they have and trust in Him and His will completely, in every aspect possible.

This is where I tie in the 'good' that can come out of my procrastinating tendencies. God is enough!

He raises the poor from the dust, and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor.  “For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s; on them he has set the world.     1 Samuel 2:8

Back to the real world... What is the "real world" anyway?  Who's world is real? Is their world any less real than mine? If I have learned anything from my time in Uganda it is that the "real world" is not America, or Africa or any other country...the "real world" is His world, all of it and God is enough!

I went on this trip expecting to share the word of God, expecting to make a difference in the lives of the people and children of Uganda, expecting to "change the world" as we say it. I expected to poor out my love to these less fortunate people. Realistically I learned that my expectations were only to make myself feel good. To say I went to another country and helped the poor makes everyone feel good right? I found that this list of expectations I had about my journey turned out to be nothing more than me being selfish. I expected these things, I wanted to feel good about my deeds, I needed to help these people who had so little, because I felt bad for them.

Let's just say my expectations for this trip went right out the window the day I arrived! My luggage was lost and I only had the pair of shoes that were on my feet. I was frustrated to say the least...besides, these were not the shoes I was planning on wearing, my village shoes were in my suitcase!

No luggage, no TV or electronics, at times there was no electricity and no water...and yet God is enough!  My heart had changed, my expectations had changed, my purpose for this journey had changed.  I knew I needed to let down my guard and follow His will for me on this trip!  When I let go and gave it all to God, is when I finally saw Him working through me!  Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.  Proverbs 16:3

All those expectations I had about me helping the poor and changing the world dissolved into friendships and relationships with the adults and the children of Uganda. These people did not need me to feel sorry for them, God was showing me that I needed them.  The people of the Wakisi village showed me joy! They may not have had clothes or shoes, but they had God and God is enough!  Here I was complaining about luggage and shoes and the children standing before me had neither.  I knew God was working on my heart.  I saw in these children God is enough!  It was no longer about lost luggage and shoes, it was about seeing these children who had nothing still sing songs of praise, still pray and thank God for the things they did have...they showed me that God is enough!  Although I only saw a portion of this large village I saw the smiles on the kids faces, I saw them shouting praise, and humbling themselves.  I didn't teach them, they taught me.

I was also able to visit an orphanage several times during my time in Uganda. The babies in this orphanage showed me joy!  These babies stole my heart immediately!
These small babies sang and clapped their hands with me as we sang. Being able to see a child go from a sad look to laughing and giggling as I tickled her was priceless!   Again I was reminded that these children did not need me to feel sorry for them....because God is enough! They just needed me to love them and hug them and show them affection.  And I could do that!  I was happy doing just that!  I may not be changing the world, but I was able to love on the children, pray over them, and build relationships. During our devotion time someone said...it's ok to be Andrew!  (Thanks Greg!)  This trip has opened my eyes to that.  We as followers of Christ each have an important role in God's plan, whether it be big or small, we are all making a difference!

Loving on the babies from the babies home and holding them, making them laugh; playing volleyball with the children in the villages, talking and truly listening to these children (even if I didn't understand them), this is why I was here. God showed me that He is enough! And although we may have our own expectations and plans, if we give it all to Him he will take us on a journey we will not forget.

I just wanted to also thank the Segners for taking such great care of our team!  Kari and Jason you have inspired me to be a better person, to be humble in all that I do!  Seeing Christ work through you and your family is powerful, I have never seen a family so humbled and so Christ driven.  Time and time again I watched as you poured out your love to our team, to the children in the villages, to the drivers who took us places, to the guard at the gate...your family inspires me to be more Christ like.  Thank you a million times!

I can not wait to go back to Uganda and see what surprises God has in store for me!

                                                                                                               Yvonne

I Love Fighting Malaria

Jambo/Hello Blogger Nation

With a very positive and joyful attitude we greet you from Jinja, Uganda.

Our team is holding on strong, an amazing group of 7 women. All of our strengths are coming through and we are able to fulfill our mission in the village.

We have been able to visit one of the villages and put up nets. In only one day we visited 19 huts and put up 39 nets. Usually, there are at least two or three children sleeping under one net. The most amazing part is that each hut gets education about the nets and prayer. The village is very large and there is lots of walking. We even went up a small hill to be able to reach those that are most isolated. The big challenge in the small huts is to find a place to hang the nets. The huts are made of mud and there are very few places to hold the nets in place. It is so nice to see the people so proud of their homes. They welcome us and appreciate the work that is being done.

We did spend one day playing with the kids. We had four stations with various games like jump rope, volleyball and music dance off.  It was a long day in the sun with lots of laughs and even our hair was done. Jason Segner gave a great lesson to the children. There were 7 cases of Malaria diagnosed that day.

Our team was able to visit the hut of Jonah, a child that very sick of Malaria the week before. His symptoms were so severe, that he had to be taken to the clinic. He was able to dance and play with all the children. It is such a blessing to see these miracles.

Thank you for all of your prayers and well wishes. We have a full day tomorrow with plenty of nets to put up.

WE MADE IT!

PRAISE GOD! We all made it safe and sound!! Thank you so much for all of the prayers! They definitely came in handy!! The first plane ride went smoothly, but was 1 hr behind. Thankfully, it did not affect our connecting flight from London! We had plenty of time and made it safely to Entebbe. There was another team on board from London coming to Uganda! They all applauded when we landed safely :) lol. Unfortunately, not all of the flights luggage made it, but praise God that a majority of ours made it & that we made it safely! So please be praying that we get the rest of our luggage soon! But if not, we have a saying from the last trip....T.I.A. (This Is Africa)...so you go with the flow and just say, "Hey, TIA!" *with a huge smile on your face :D!!! But God well prepared us by packing extra stuff on our carry on that will come in handy! And only 2 of the 7 of us don't have our luggage. Our other team members have been so gracious to lend us anything we may need! God has us covered!! The bus ride was only about 2 hours from Entebbe to Jinja thanks to our wonderful drivers! We got here about 3 am Ugandan time and crashed! We slept in until about 11:30 am and had a delicious lunch with the Segners, McMorris', and interns Katie and Greg! We ate Posho (which is almost like mashed potatoes, but is like corn meal made of maize) and beans (which tasted just like Mexican charro beans) So YUM! Now we are enjoying some rest/quiet time, preparing for the work the Lord has for us within the coming days! I am so excited to be back in Jinja, it literally feels like I am coming home. Thank you all for your support in getting us here! I pray that God continually uses you all to be a blessing and to be blessed!! All for His Glory! Keep the prayers coming! Thank you with lots of love! Ana Banana!

3 weeks away!

Today marks 3 weeks to go until we leave for Jinja, Uganda! PRAISE GOD for His hand in our fundraising! THANK YOUUUU to everyone who has contributed!! After a HUGE success at our last garage sale, we are getting closer to our individual goals to reach the goal per person for the trip. God has been SO FAITHFUL in His promise to provide what we need, exactly when we need it. His ways are not our ways, His thoughts are not our thoughts. Even if we think we have things perfectly planned, His plan is always the better one because He knows our hearts more than we even do. I love serving a God that loves His children unconditionally!! It is such a blessing!! I wanted to say a big THANK YOU for all of the prayers and donations (items, monetary, time, etc) to our efforts thus far and ask for continued prayer for His will to be done June 25th - July 7th through us and continually through Healing Faith Ministry and all of the people who serve through them!! Prayer warriors are the BEST and I humbly ask that you keep all parts of Healing Faith and the people of Uganda in your prayers!! Thank you! I am so excited to finally be there & be in the villages with the kiddos singing, Chicky Chicky and dancing!! lol. Last but not least, I ask that if you are reading this and haven't already donated, please pray about making a donation to the group to help get us through this last push of fundraising. I sincerely believe in God's superiority and that He has already placed the desire in the hearts of people that He wants to donate towards our trip. I am trusting that if it is you reading this, He has already told you or has tried to tell you. (lol we can be hard headed sometimes) And I will testify that He will bless your obedience overwhelmingly according to His will and purpose for your life. With that, I would also like to challenge you to stop today and recognize how He has blessed you thus far. Whether it is with nice things, education, children, marriage, a job....the list can go on and on. But just know that all good things come from heaven above. He loves us. Uncondtionally. Yesterday. Today. Tomorrow. Forever. I. Love. My. Jesus. God the Father. & Holy Spirit. Have a blessed day my friends! Ana Banana!

Baby Kits!

Do you have a pile of old baby things laying around?  Or a gift card that has gone unused from Target or Walmart?  Would you like to help us provide Healing Faith with Baby Kits?!!

In the US when one of our sweet friends finds out she is expecting, there is nothing but joy, and showers and love and support!  We plan these elaborate showers, with beautiful decorations, and presents galore!  Baby has everything needed, from burp cloths to the finest stroller!
But, have you ever wondered what it is like to have a baby in a third world country?

In Uganda, moms to be are not worried about whether or not they will have an epidural, they are worried about whether or not they will have the necessary things needed to give birth.  And by necessary I mean plastic sheeting, razor blades, cotton wool (gauze pad), soap, gloves, cord ties, and a child health card.  These are the basic things needed to give a safe delivery, and they are NOT provided at the local clinic.  You must bring it.  Can you imagine having to bring your own delivery items to the hospital!  Thankfully there is an awesome organization in Uganda who gives them out, and who Healing Faith has created a relationship with in order to provide the mommas in the villages these kits.

However, in Uganda, mommas also do not have the basics for their babies like we do.  Most of the time, providing a new baby with the bare minimum is difficult, at best.  It is an area that Healing Faith wants to help with! And something YOU can be a part of!

Our team is looking to put together some Baby Kits to bring to Healing Faith so that they can then provide new mommas and babies with some essentials!
What is a Baby Kit?
1 receiving blanket, 1 onsie, 1 hat, 1 set of socks and a cloth diaper.

We have a pile of onsies (thank you Meredith!!) and want to ask for donations for the other things!

If you have old receiving blankets you are no longer using, or little baby hats, any of these things (even onsies!!) please let me know by email: rachel.driskell@yahoo.com
I will come pick them up, or meet you somewhere!!

Thanks in advance!!

*Boldly Pray

Hello Blogger Nation

Our team is less than a month away from leaving to Jinja!!! We had a great Fundraising Garage Sale at my sister's house. Lots of our friends donated and many people purchased our items. There is such a great spirit of community in Aggieland that is amazing.

As a Podiatrist  Assistant there is a great comfort to hear the sigh of relief from the family, when the doctor says "Patient is doing well, everything went as planned". It is called bedside manner, but not all doctors know about this concept. Fortunately, most of the doctors that I have encountered have excellent insight into the importance on comforting the patient and the family. I was fortunate to witness one doctor asking the patient, if it would be ok to pray. My doctors have been asked to pray with the family. And as a patient my doctor has prayed for me. There is such a warm and calming feeling when you know that not only a great physician is working on your case, but God who created all humans is leading the team:)

Healing Faith has the best doctors you have ever met. None of the staff have MD after their names, but they know how to comfort, calm and cure. Jason Segner has years of medical training, but his best  prescription in the villages is for the patient to drink water due to dehydration.  Kari is magnetically attracted to the child that needs to be held. Even Tom, the security guard, knows that his greeting and smile after a long day at the village will cure you of most complaints. The community that has been built in Jinja with Healing Faith is so contagious that all you want to do is talk about the Segner's and Healing Faith.

Thank you Lord for the wonderful blessings in our lives. I boldly pray that our mission team have phycisian hearts. That we not only help erradicate Malaria, but comfort, calm and bring God's Love as a cure. Amen
